Everybody Has a Story: An Evening of Storytelling
About
How it all started
Inspired by the magpie bird, who collects shiny things to take back to its nest, Mag Pie aims to highlight the "shiny things" in life. That means both things and experiences we collect that make up a fulfilling life.
I love magazines, and I love living in Iowa. I know a lot of talented people who are doing interesting things, and I wanted to feature them and celebrate the culture we are creating in our home state. Mag Pie is a celebration of interesting, talented people and their passions!
Emily Stowe, Founding Editor
If you wish to know the origin story of Mag Pie, here it is! This is the video of my presentation called Building Community: Engaging with a Local Audience that I gave as part of the Author Seedbed series at the Waterloo Public Library on August 27th, 2024. It is about my creative history as an artist and writer, my work history and volunteer experiences, and how together they all inspired Mag Pie. Later, this led to my job at the North American Review, and I talk about what I do now as the managing editor and visual art editor. I end with some examples of full-circle moments of community connections that prove I am living my destiny. Thanks to Felicia Babb Cass for hosting this video on her EarthWhispers Abbey YouTube channel!
